A lab tech picks up a vial labeled "Sterile Water for Injection (SWFI)" and a colleague asks: Is this the same as bacteriostatic water? The answer matters. One supports short-term single-dose use; the other extends shelf life in multi-dose vials. Yet the two are often confused in procurement, leading to wrong product orders, wasted inventory, and unnecessary cost.
This article cuts through that confusion with the technical facts you need to specify SWFI in your own lab—and to understand when you should reach for bacteriostatic water instead.
What SWFI Actually Is
Sterile Water for Injection is defined in USP <71> (Sterility Tests) and further specified in USP <621> (Water for Pharmaceutical Purposes). The key distinction: SWFI contains no antimicrobial preservative. It is pyrogen-free water that has been sterilized and packaged to remain sterile until opened.
The practical implication is stark. Once you open a vial of SWFI, you have a narrow window—typically 24 hours at room temperature or up to 14 days under refrigeration at 2–8 °C—before microbial contamination becomes likely (USP <71> guidance on post-opening stability). A reconstituted compound left on the bench for 48 hours becomes risky.
Bacteriostatic water includes 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative, which inhibits bacterial and fungal growth (USP <51>, Antimicrobial Effectiveness). This allows multi-dose vials to remain usable for weeks, provided aseptic technique is maintained throughout.
The Manufacturing and Testing Difference
Both products begin as deionized, purified water. Sterilization diverges next.
SWFI is sterilized by 0.22 μm membrane filtration or autoclaving at 121 °C for 15–30 minutes (USP <621>). Filtration removes particles >0.22 μm; autoclaving denatures pyrogenic contaminants through heat. Testing requirements are rigorous. Every lot of SWFI must pass:

A single positive sterility result means batch rejection. No exceptions.
Bacteriostatic water undergoes identical testing plus verification that 0.9% benzyl alcohol concentration falls within 0.8–1.1% w/v (USP <51>). This narrow range matters: below 0.8%, preservative efficacy drops sharply; above 1.1%, benzyl alcohol toxicity emerges in vulnerable populations.

- You are performing USP <797>-compliant pharmacy compounding and your SOP mandates preservative-free water for certain preparations
Bacteriostatic water is the right choice if:
- You are preparing multi-dose vials that will be stored and drawn from over days or weeks
- Your lab has validated aseptic technique with documented sampling plans (USP <1207>, Sterile Product Preparation)
- Cost per reconstitution matters; bacteriostatic water (typically $0.15–$0.25 per mL in bulk) costs less per mL than SWFI because one vial serves multiple uses
- You are handling peptides or research compounds that tolerate benzyl alcohol without loss of potency

- Re-cap the vial immediately after each draw
- Use aseptic technique (70% isopropyl alcohol swab on the septum, sterile needle/syringe)
- Store in the dark; light promotes bacterial growth
- Prevent freezing
When SWFI reconstitutes a lyophilized powder, the resulting solution's stability depends on both the water and the drug substance. Always consult the drug's stability data. Some compounds remain stable for six months in SWFI under proper storage; others degrade within 48 hours.
Practical Recommendations
For procurement: Define your use case before ordering. Contract research labs (CROs) handling multiple peptide projects monthly find bacteriostatic water financially and operationally efficient. Clinical compounding pharmacies reconstituting single-dose preparations for same-day administration need SWFI as their baseline.
For validation: Scaling from bench to GLP-regulated work? Request a stability study comparing your compound in SWFI versus bacteriostatic water. Some compounds are indifferent; others show significant interaction with benzyl alcohol. Capture this data early.
For sourcing: Don't assume all SWFI is identical. Request CoAs before purchase. Check endotoxin values if the final product will be administered parenterally. Some suppliers consistently achieve 0.08–0.10 EU/mL, while others test at the upper limit (0.25 EU/mL). Small in absolute terms, yet the gap signals manufacturing discipline.
For storage: Keep SWFI in a climate-controlled cabinet (20–25 °C). Avoid direct sunlight. Treat opened vials as 24-hour resources; discard any remainder if you question technique or elapsed time.
